The iPhone 12 is expected to feature a groundbreaking new 5G point and support, but Apple seems to be delaying the launch of the new device, possibly by 2021, due to the coronavirus pandemic, officially known as COVID-19. The news comes from Nikkei's austere review, which cites three sources "familiar with the subject".
If Apple delayed the iPhone 12, it would be huge news. Flagship iPhones have been launched in September each year since 2011 and customers are now in the family way a new iPhone at that time of year. The coroner place pressure on supply chains and, even if the iPhone 12 was announced in September, there could be a delay in phone release or at least a limited offer.
"Restricting the supply chain aside, Apple is concerned that the current situation will significantly lower consumer inclination to upgrade their phones, which could lead to a smooth download of the first iPhone 5G," a source told Nikkei Asian Review. "They need the first iPhone 5G to be a hit."
There could be other reasons for a delay. According to the report, Apple is supposed to work with vendors on original components for the new iPhone, but was forced to delay this process due to travel restrictions.
Apple is already a few years behind some of its largest competitors in launching a 5G phone. Samsung, Huawei, LG and others all launched 5G phones last year and Apple probably wants to incorporate the new technology as soon as possible. According to the report, Apple will make a closing choice on when to release the new iPhone around May, with its choice dependent on the coronado pandemic and the comprehensive economy. In a worst-case scenario, Nikkei sources say the device could be delayed by 2021, which could seriously disrupt Apple's product roadmap.
Apple is rumored to be hosting a hardware event in Development 2020, but the company has chosen to tell new products, such as the new iPad Pro and MacBook Air, via a press release on its website. The company has also announced that the annual Worldwide Developer Conference will be online only.
